Typing Game of Thrones Characters with CPT
This blog post is going to explore the personality types of the vast majority of characters from Game of Thrones. I'll be typing each major and minor character based on the principles of Cognitive Personality Theory (CPT), which is an advanced system focused on cognitive functions, and also supplying their personality traits within the Big Five. For each character, I'll share my reasoning, but keep in mind that personality typing is subjective—we should always remain open to other interpretations!
You will also notice an interesting trend: Most (though not all) of the characters tend to have extraverted cognitions, even if their personality traits (i.e., the behaviour on top of the cognition) might be more intro- or ambiverted. Within CPT, extraverted cognition is one that can readily react to the external world without requiring a buffer between oneself and external reality. The style of cognition is also more naturally interactive, making it one that can stand out more easily within such a chaotic world as Westeros. The remaining introverts tend to have especially unique personalities.
Some of the typings here will defy stereotypes and misconceptions about various types, presenting a more balanced and realistic depiction through the particularly realistic and multi-dimensional characters of Game of Thrones.
For anyone wanting a deep dive into cognitive functions, feel free to check out Cognitive Personality. The website includes a wealth of information, including a wiki, coaching, and typing services that could help you discover your type or develop it, much as characters do in this epic series.
Eddard Stark: The ESFJ Protector
Ned Stark's personality fits the ESFJ type. He demonstrates a lot of Si (Introverted Sensing) and Ti- (Divergent Introverted Thinking) rigidity, showing his adherence to rules and customs. His Fe+ (Extraverted Feeling) is convergent, meaning he upholds social ethics and traditions to a fault—even giving his life for what he views as honourable. Concepts like honor and ethics are very much Fe-Ti territory. Ned is focused on upholding order and duty, which are hallmarks of the ESFJ archetype, while also keenly tied to his relationships and community in a highly FeNe+ manner.
Arya Stark: The ISFP Maverick
Arya Stark presents a great contrast to her father. She embodies the ISFP type, which shows in her deep, often overwhelming Fi (Introverted Feeling) compass. Arya is always true to herself, and her values drive her actions. Her Ni (Introverted Intuition), in an agency role, makes her more focused, calculating, and, indeed, ruthless than Fi stereotypes would indicate, which is why ISFPs often mistype as INTPs or ENTPs. Arya's relentless transformation and evolution scream FiNi, which drives her into unique, determined paths of self-expression.
Bran Stark: From ENFP to INFJ
Bran Stark is unique in that he seems to undergo a significant personality change. Initially, he fits the ENFP archetype as a curious, free-spirited child, driven by Ne (Extraverted Intuition) exploration. However, after his fall and the ensuing journey, Bran becomes more INFJ, developing a detached NiTi erudition focused upon overarching narrative structures and more abstract contingencies. This convergence makes him seem detached, cool, and highly intuitive—fitting for someone with Ni dominance and Ti insight, rather than the emotional warmth typically attributed to Fe convergence.
Sansa Stark: The Evolving ESFJ
Sansa Stark's character growth is one of the most substantial in the series. She begins as an idealistic - and somehwat naive - child and transforms into a savvy politician in the game of thrones, embodying an ESFJ cognition with a surface personality nonetheless quite different to her father. Sansa's Ti provides her with a framework of how things "should be," and her FeNe is highly adaptive—allowing her to skillfully navigate social dynamics. Like Ned, she holds tradition and expectation dearly, but her journey adds a layer of strategic adaptability to her personality, and likely a higher degree of ambiversion via an FiNi dip.
Cersei Lannister: The Dark ENFJ
Cersei Lannister is complex, and I type her as an ENFJ. Her TiNi- is constantly working to forecast the future, while her FeSe+ is subtler yet also more directly manipulative than that of an ESFJ or ENTJ, having a highly transactional quality. Cersei's fears—of being humiliated or losing her children—drive her behavior. Her Ti ruthlessness shows in her strategic decision-making as well as her logical bluntness and 'just so' approaches to confrontation, which often veers toward the dark side, making her an example of a more destructive and paranoid ENFJ.
Jon Snow: The ISTP Hero
Jon Snow is typed as an ISTP, sharing characteristics with real life ISTP figures like Johnny Depp, whom like this character are commonly mischaracterised as Fi dominants. His FeSe (Extraverted Feeling) divergence makes him seem softer and more emotionally attuned than other Ti (Introverted Thinking) types like INTPs or INFJs. Jon is deeply TiNi focused, with Ni providing strategic foresight on behalf of the Fe collective, albeit on a more moment-to-moment basis. Though opposite to his father in cognition, both Jon and Ned share an innate nobility, but from different psychological starting points. Jon Snow is a great example of how Ti dominance does not imply the absence of Fi, merely a Ti-Fe starting point on the Ti-Fi continuum.
Tyrion Lannister: The ENTP Trickster
Tyrion Lannister is the quintessential ENTP, and an occasion where stereotypes of cognition can match the reality. He possesses Ne (Extraverted Intuition) in abundance, accompanied by Fe that supports witty banter and interpersonal adaptation. His Ti is sharp and calculating, paired with Si (Introverted Sensing), making him a master of both logic and wordplay and precise and articulate in this Thinking Style. His Fi blind spot adds complexity to his character, allowing him to be noble without necessarily identifying as such nor strongly aware of his more altruistic temperament until later on in the show, following a growth journey of an eNF learning to take themselves and their boundaries seriously, as well as those of others.
Tommen Baratheon: The INFJ Heir
Tommen Baratheon is an INFJ. He exhibits a lot of Fe (Extroverted Feeling) divergent sensitivity, showing empathy and concern for those around him. His Ni (Introverted Intuition) gives him an idealistic view of what a ruler should be, though it comes from a youthful and naive place. Tommen's Ti (Introverted Thinking) supports his internal reasoning, though it is still developing, making him a gentle, holistically-inclined, and well-meaning, yet ultimately impressionable, young king.
Joffrey Baratheon: The ENTJ Tyrant
Joffrey Baratheon is typed as an ENTJ, albeit one suffering from Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), which complicates his personality. His Te (Extroverted Thinking) drives his need for control and power, while his Ni (Introverted Intuition) authority gives him a vision of dominance, albeit twisted by his lack of empathy and emotional instability. Joffrey's Fi (Introverted Feeling) is underdeveloped, making him impulsive in his cruelty, and his personality lacks depth due to the overpowering influence of his disorder, making his ENTJ traits manifest in a particularly destructive way.
Tormund Giantsbane: The ESFP Barbarian
Tormund Giantsbane is an ESFP. He is larger than life, impulsive, and fiercely straightforward, driven by Se (Extroverted Sensing) to embrace the present and live boldly. His Te (Extroverted Thinking) allows him to take direct action and handle obstacles effectively, while his Fi (Introverted Feeling) authority is evident in his loyalty to those he cares about, particularly Jon Snow. Tormund's charisma and zest for life embody the ESFP spirit of adventure and authenticity.
Ygritte: The ISTJ Ranger
Ygritte embodies the ISTJ type. She is fiercely loyal, pragmatic, and driven by her Si (Introverted Sensing), which roots her in her attachment to her people and traditions. Her Fi (Introverted Feeling) motivates her strong personal values and her love for Jon Snow, and her Te (Extroverted Thinking) is evident in her practical and serious approach to challenges. Ygritte lacks the impulsivity often associated with more extroverted types, showing instead a grounded and duty-oriented personality.
Daenerys Targaryen: The Visionary ENFJ
Daenerys Targaryen is another ENFJ, but in contrast to Cersei, she brings light and hope to her followers. Her Ni authority provides visionary guidance for her Fe dominant leadership, and her Feeling style matches the nuance and sensitivity of an FS (FeSe) pairing. Unlike ESFJs, who often work within established systems, Daenerys is reform-oriented—fueling her utopian ideals and the drive to build a better world in line with her own underlying FiSi values formed through a combination of personal healing and inherent ambiversion.
Jaime Lannister: The ESTP Warrior
Jaime Lannister is an ESTP, characterised by Se (Extraverted Sensing) dominance and Fe agency, leading to a witty, focused, and present dominant pairing. He is courageous and in tune with his surroundings, showing skill in action-oriented scenarios. His Ti is present but more generalised, providing a contrast to his brother Tyrion's precision. Jaime's Fi blind spot results in his often being unaware of his own underlying nobility and compassion, and as with his brother ensue a tendency to downplay cases of seriousness and emotional vulnerability.
Catelyn Stark: The ISFJ Protector
Catelyn Stark fits well with the ISFJ archetype. She is very calculating and shrewd, but consistently takes a step back to assess the right course of action with the precise, process-oriented pairing of SiTi. Fe and Fi both play roles in her decisions, contributing to her fierce protection of her family and a quite, underlying resentment that stems from Fi being overlooked for the perceived greater good.
Petyr Baelish (Littlefinger): The ESTP Strategist
Petyr Baelish might initially seem like an ENTJ (or INTJ for those who buy into the 16p type descriptions), but I think he fits better as an ESTP. His Ti-Fe axis and Se dominance make him a master manipulator and able to turn any form of chaos into an opportunity (a classic eSF strength!). His Ni is oppositional yet incredibly wilful, and while SeFe is razor-sharp in its wit and rapport, NiTi- ensures a true comitment to the game of thrones and a naturally gamified approach to life.
Sandor Clegane (The Hound): The ISTJ Defender
The Hound is typed as an ISTJ, with Fi deep inside, creating a core of personal values that he fiercely defends. He lacks Fe, which makes him blunt, yet he's deeply loyal once he forms an attachment. His SiFi dominant repairing reflects a disciplined type often portrayed as warriors—strong in maintaining their convictions, as well as their grudges.
Gregor Clegane (The Mountain): The ESFP Bruiser
Gregor Clegane is a challenging character to type due to his lack of empathy and overt aggression. I type him as an ESFP, but a very dark version. He operates on Fi (Introverted Feeling) divergence, which makes him impulsive—acting on whatever primal urges come up. His SeTe drives his need for intensity and power, but without Ti reflection or Fe consideration for others. His straightforward nature fits well with ESFP traits when taken to an extreme, though is an unusually brutal manifestation of type that is typically more gentle.
Varys: The INTP Spider
Varys is a master coordinator and planner with a penchant for the raw and unfiltered truth, making INTP the most fitting type for him. His Ti (Introverted Thinking) allows him to devise intricate strategies and maintain a detached, analytical TS approach in his pursuit of balance and equilibrium. His Ne (Extraverted Intuition) authority helps him see possibilities and adapt to the changing political landscape. Varys' commitment to the realm over personal ambition and his ability to navigate complex social dynamics are characteristic of an INTP having integrated with their Fe oppositional.
Osha: The ENFP Survivor
Osha, the wildling, is a good representation of an ENFP. She is fiercely independent and adaptable, with Ne (Extraverted Intuition) driving her quick thinking and improvisational skills. Her Fi (Introverted Feeling) is what motivates her loyalty and protective nature towards Bran and Rickon. Osha’s Te (Extraverted Thinking) is practical, allowing her to survive in harsh environments and navigate challenges with resourcefulness, while also having the looser and more improvisational nature of Te in agentive position to Ne.
Jorah Mormont: The ESFJ Loyalist
Jorah Mormont is a classic ESFJ. He is steadfast, dutiful, and deeply loyal, especially to Daenerys. His Fe (Extraverted Feeling) drives his devotion to his cause, making him attentive to the needs of others and eager to serve. His Si (Introverted Sensing) divergence provides a strong sense of duty and tradition, while Ne (Extraverted Intuition) convergence allows him to adapt to changing circumstances. Jorah's loyalty and protective nature are characteristic of an ESFJ deeply committed to those he cares about, and exemplifies the role-fulfilling nature of Fe dominance.
Melisandre: The ENFP Mystic
Melisandre is an interesting case and fits well as an ENFP. She embodies Ne (Extraverted Intuition) in her belief in prophecy and the Lord of Light, seeing connections that others do not. Her Fi (Introverted Feeling) is intense, guiding her faith and actions, while her Te (Extraverted Thinking) is evident in how she executes her vision. Melisandre's charisma and persuasive nature make her a compelling ENFP who defies the typical “social butterfly” stereotype, presenting a more serious and cunning side to a misunderstood type.
Brienne of Tarth: The INTJ Knight
Brienne is an INTJ, driven by Ni (Introverted Intuition) to fulfill her vision of honour and knighthood. Her Fi (Introverted Feeling) gives her a deep internal sense of right and wrong, which guides her unwavering dedication. Brienne is a fitting example of how so many INTJs defy their stereotypes, channeling her Te (Extraverted Thinking) into her martial skill and strategy, showcasing the INTJ capacity to be both strong and principled and very much capable of stepping in the warrior role if it aligns with their NiFi archetype: In this case, the archetype of the knight. Her journey is a testament to an INTJ's sense of purpose and adherence to destiny.
Ramsay Bolton: The ESTP Sadist
Ramsay is an ESTP, albeit a dark and sociopathic manifestation of a type usually known for its heroism. This character is an excellent portrayal of how Extraverted Feeling (Fe) is not all about harmony - indeed, in agency position such as that of the ESTP the cognitive element is naturally more creative and above all else novelty-seeking. SeFe is a pairing that is notoriously easily bored, and Ramsay develops his Introverted Thinking frameworks to develop his own sadistic crafts to satiate this boredom while directing attention away from his pain-filled Introverted Feeling in the unconcious depths of his psyche.
Lyanna Mormont: The ESTJ Leader
Lyanna Mormont grew up quickly, stepping into her leadership role with unwavering conviction. She embodies the ESTJ type, driven by solid FiSi values that guide her sense of duty and honour. Lyanna doesn't hesitate to act when her people need her, displaying the Te (Extraverted Thinking) assertiveness typical of an ESTJ, which allows her to stand firm and lead with courage.
Gendry: The ISFJ Smith
Gendry is an ISFJ. He is quiet, noble, and dignified, adapting to circumstances beyond his control with resilience. His Si (Introverted Sensing) helps him remain grounded in his identity as a blacksmith, while Fe (Extraverted Feeling) shows in his loyalty and desire to protect those he cares for, underlying a keen Ti (Introverted Thinking) sense of understanding and wisdom. Gendry's adaptable and steadfast nature makes him a clear representation of the ISFJ type.
Yara Greyjoy: The ENTJ Commander
Yara Greyjoy defies the typical ENTJ stereotype of having a grand master plan and delusions of grandeur. Instead, she exhibits TeSe pragmatism, plowing her way through obstacles with fierce determination. Her Fi (Introverted Feeling) may be hard to discern, but it manifests through her drive to protect those close to her and her unwavering loyalty to her family, as well as a calm acceptance of the harshness of reality. Yara is a bold and driven ENTJ, willing to do whatever it takes to succeed.
Robb Stark: The ESTP Hero
Robb Stark is a classic ESTP hero. His Se (Extraverted Sensing) allows him to adapt to situations and step into his role with courage, while his Ti (Introverted Thinking) supports his tactical and adaptable nature. However, his downfall lies in his romantic SeFe nature and willingness to go against the status quo on its behalf, which ultimately leads to his demise. Robb is a great example of an integrated ESTP who defies the roguish stereotypes, embracing his Ni (Introverted Intuition) divergence as he accepts his destiny.
Author's Note: When filming the video I went with ESFJ, but on reflection during the writing of this article I found ESTP (albeit with an ESFJ) to be a better fit!

Alliser Thorne: The ESTJ Realist
Alliser Thorne is an ESTJ, though a more disagreeable one. He does whatever it takes to ensure the survival of the Night's Watch, even if it means playing the villain. Thorne embodies FiSi- that has been jaded by a harsh reality, making him willing to make difficult decisions for the greater good. He is a natural commander who exemplifies the tough, survival-oriented side of the ESTJ type.
Podrick Payne: The ISTJ Squire
Podrick Payne is a perfect example of an ISTJ, yet one that defies the disgruntled stereotype. He is agreeable, humble, and innocent, adapting to situations beyond his control while maintaining a good heart and a consistent sense of character. His Te (Extraverted Thinking) authority accepts his place within hierarchies, and he steps into action when needed, showcasing the dependable nature of SiFi.
Mance Rayder: The ENTJ Rebel
Mance Rayder is an ENTJ who exemplifies what this type can achieve when they follow their convictions and tune into a deeper altruistic part of themselves. His considerable Te (Extraverted Thinking) and charisma allow him to unite the disparate wildling clans, pulling off what many thought impossible. Mance's Fi (Introverted Feeling) divergence drives him to protect his people, and he carries himself with dignity and courage, even in the face of death.
Gilly: The ISFJ Guardian
Gilly is likely an ISFJ. She is gentle, compassionate, and driven by an Si (Introverted Sensing) drive for consistency and solidity, which motivates her deep commitment to protecting her child. Her Fe (Extraverted Feeling) helps her form strong bonds, and she shows surprising resilience despite her circumstances. As with many ISFJs, she defies her stereotype in her highly effective Ne oppositional that is able to survive and adapt within a chaotic external world. Gilly's determination to protect those she loves showcase her ISFJ traits.
Roose Bolton: The ESTJ Schemer
Roose Bolton is an ESTJ through and through. He is calculating, ruthless, and relies heavily on his adaptable Te (Extraverted Thinking) and Ne (Extraverted Intuition) to achieve his goals via opportunism. His Si (Introverted Sensing) gives him a traditionalist streak, adhering to the power structures in Westeros while exploiting them to his advantage. Roose's Fi is cold and self-serving, reflecting a survivalist approach.
Barristan Selmy: The ESFJ Knight
Barristan Selmy exemplifies an ESFJ archetype. He is steadfast, dutiful, and deeply committed to his ideals of honor and loyalty. His Fe (Extraverted Feeling) drives his dedication to those he serves, and his Si (Introverted Sensing) authority supports his adherence to tradition and duty. Barristan's sense of duty is unwavering, and he represents the ESFJ's desire to protect and uphold what is right, and is a lesson in just because a type's Fe-Ti axis is pronounced, it does not mean they lack their own personal moral compass nor attunement to it.
Daario Naharis: The ENTP Rogue
Daario Naharis is an ENTP—charismatic, roguish, and quick-witted. He uses Ne (Extraverted Intuition) to adapt to situations, and his Fe (Extraverted Feeling) makes him charming, albeit somewhat unpredictable. Daario's Ti (Introverted Thinking) is evident in his mastery of various skills, and the precision and dexterity of this character exemplifies Si (Introverted Sensing) when paired to a Ti authority.
High Sparrow: The Dark INFJ
The High Sparrow represents a darker side of the INFJ. His Ni (Introverted Intuition) drives his vision for societal reform, while his Fe (Extraverted Feeling) is focused on influencing others under the guise of compassion. His Ti (Introverted Thinking) agency makes him rigid in his beliefs, leading to a form of moral absolutism that is ultimately destructive, and indicative of the dark side of an NiTi+ pairing taken to the furthest extreme. He is an example of an INFJ who becomes so certain of their worldview that it turns malignant.
Aemon Targaryen: The INFJ Sage
Aemon Targaryen, the blind Maester of the Night's Watch, embodies the INFJ type. His Ni (Introverted Intuition) gives him profound insight into the struggles faced by those around him, while his Fe (Extraverted Feeling) authority drives his compassion and empathy. Aemon's wisdom and ability to see beyond the immediate circumstances make him a true INFJ, guiding others with a gentle yet firm hand. His Ti (Introverted Thinking) allows him to analyze situations deeply to the holistic agenda of Ni, and his commitment to the Night's Watch is a testament to his Ti-Fe communal orientation.
Hodor: The Gentle INFP
Hodor, though cognitively limited, embodies the INFP type, a type usually otherwise known for its intellect and cognitive flexibility. He is kind, compassionate, and deeply loyal. His Fi (Introverted Feeling) is pure, always focused on protecting Bran, and his Ne (Extraverted Intuition) would likely have developed further had he not experienced trauma. Hodor's gentle demeanor and willingness to sacrifice himself align well with an FiSi pairing that is willing to sacrifice itself for the sake of those it loves.
The Night King: The ENTJ Force of Nature
The Night King is challenging to type due to his lack of expression and, well, personality.. but ENTJ fits well on a superficial level. He is cold, calculating, and demonstrates Te (Extraverted Thinking) in his tactical approach to warfare. His Ni (Introverted Intuition) provides a singular vision of conquest, making him an unstoppable force driven by a clear purpose.
Olenna Tyrell: The ESTJ Matriarch
Olenna Tyrell is an ESTJ with sharp wit and tactical prowess. She uses Te (Extraverted Thinking) to command respect and influence, while her Si (Introverted Sensing) keeps her firmly rooted in the traditions and power dynamics of Westeros. Olenna's Fi- is evident in her loyalty to her family, and her willingness to take drastic measures to protect them.
Oberyn Martell: The ENTP Duelist
Oberyn Martell is an ENTP—witty, charming, and passionate. His Ne (Extraverted Intuition) is evident in his broad worldview and adaptability. He uses Fe (Extraverted Feeling) to navigate social situations with ease, and his Ti (Introverted Thinking) shows in his skill with words and combat. Oberyn's Fi blind spot makes his motivations complex, often driven by both nobility and vengeance and not always fully beknownst to himself.
Bronn: The ESTP Opportunist
Bronn is a classic ESTP—pragmatic, action-oriented, and resourceful. His Se (Extraverted Sensing) makes him highly focused, intense, and adaptive, while his Ti (Introverted Thinking) is sharp and strategic. Bronn is opportunistic, using his Fe to charm others when needed but ultimately looking out for himself. His quick wit and adaptability make him an archetypal ESTP rogue.
Davos Seaworth (The Onion Knight): The ESTJ Advisor
Davos Seaworth is an ESTJ. He is cunning, resourceful, and adaptable, driven by Te (Extraverted Thinking), which allows him to take charge and provide a clear direction. Davos shows creativity in his problem-solving, often thinking outside the box to navigate difficult political situations. His ability to advise and influence powerful leaders, despite his humble origins, demonstrates his shrewdness and his knack for turning adversity into opportunity. Despite his humble origins, Davos is deeply committed to serving Stannis and later Jon Snow, embodying the ESTJ's dedication to leadership and responsibility.
Khal Drogo: The ESTJ Warlord
Khal Drogo is an ESTJ. He is assertive, commanding, and fiercely protective of his people, driven by Te (Extraverted Thinking) to lead with authority. His Si (Introverted Sensing) authority - one of the rare instances of Si equating to traditionalism - supports his adherence to Dothraki traditions and customs, while his Fi (Introverted Feeling), though less initially apparent, motivates his loyalty to Daenerys once he accepts her as his wife as well as his strong protective instincts.
Sam Tarly: The INFP Scholar
Sam Tarly is an INFP. He is gentle, empathetic, and driven by Fi (Introverted Feeling), which guides his actions based on his internal values and sense of right and wrong. His Ne (Extraverted Intuition) authority shows in his curiosity and interest in learning, making him a natural scholar and an excellent example of the oftentimes natural academic aptitude of this type. Sam’s Si (Introverted Sensing) provides a connection to causality and history, while his Te (Extraverted Thinking) divergence gives him a cautious streak but also helps him make practical decisions, albeit reluctantly, when his loved ones are at stake.
Jeor Mormont: The ESTJ Commander
Jeor Mormont, the former Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, exemplifies the ESTJ type. He is authoritative, disciplined, and deeply committed to his duty. His Te (Extroverted Thinking) drives him to maintain order within the Night's Watch, while his Si (Introverted Sensing) authority supports his respect for the traditions and history of the Night's Watch. Jeor's leadership style is straightforward and pragmatic, and he is always ready to make the tough decisions needed to protect the realm, with his solid Fi (Introverted Feeling) convictions always up to the task and ready to take on the long dark.
Grey Worm: The ESFJ Soldier
Grey Worm is an ESFJ. He is loyal, dutiful, and deeply committed to his role as the leader of the Unsullied. His Fe (Extroverted Feeling) drives his loyalty to Daenerys and his desire to protect his fellow soldiers. Si (Introverted Sensing) helps him adhere to the customs and training of the Unsullied, while his Ne (Extroverted Intuition) allows him to adapt when his worldview begins to expand through his relationship with Missandei, and maintain a consistent awareness of contexts.
Missandei: The INFJ Confidante
Missandei is an INFJ, characterised by her empathy, insight, and deep loyalty. Her Ni (Introverted Intuition) allows her to understand the complexities of the political landscape, and her Fe (Extroverted Feeling) makes her a trusted advisor and confidante to Daenerys. Ti (Introverted Thinking) supports her ability to analyze and articulate ideas, while her compassionate nature embodies the values of an INFJ.
